A Spoon and Other Inventions

9" by 12" oil and collage on stretched canvas, unframed. I have a collection of vintage children's encyclopedias that I love. I enjoy the drawings, the colors and the way knowledge is organized and categorized. The section on inventions seems a bit naive in it's presentation, but, it truly is awe inspiring to think of all the amazing things that people have come up with. The collaged circles on my painting of the spoon include nylons, a zipper, sewing machine, a television and more. I don't know who invented the spoon, anyone know?  SOLD

Reflecion on a Sugar Bowl

12" by 12" oil on stretched canvas. I hadn't used oils in some time. I always forget how vastly different acrylics and oils are in the way the paint holds it's brushmark with texture and color separation. SOLD

Sometimes a painting idea comes from a desire to combine colors rather than specific subject matter. I've been wanting to use brown and red together for some time. I finally noticed the brown and white transferware plate hanging in the bathroom when I had the perfect red bell pepper. The teal background wasn't part of the original impulse, oh well, each painting has a life of it's own you have to respect. SOLD

I've been away so long I almost forgot my password to log in to Blogger. We've had computer trouble, hopefully it's fixed now. I have a backlog of a few paintings to add over the next few days. Right now I need to go find a very noisy cricket hiding somewhere in the kitchen. I thought they were summer bugs.

Lime Bright

The sun was bright today! This was after a cold day with snow yesterday. This is a 6" by 6" acrylic on gessoed masonite. SOLD

Palimpsest Exhibit

Here are some photos of our exhibit at the ACU Cockerell Art Gallery. It was a great night, over 300 people came! It opened on Abilene's monthly Artwalk, Feb 14th and will continue until March 7.

The second picture down is of Robert Green, Kenny Jones and me. We're standing in front of a couple of Robert's wonderful mixed media pieces. The last photo is of Kenny and me, his drawing is on the right and my painting is on the left.

Empty Bowls

This Saturday, Feb 23 between 11 am and 7 pm there will be an opportunity to participate in Abilene, Tx first Empty Bowl project. It will benefit hungry people on the local and international level. How it works...artists donate ceramic bowls that they have created. These are used for holding soup that area people can donate money for(suggested minimum of 10 dollars) What a great idea! You get a meal and a bowl! There will also be an auction that includes artwork, crafts, and items from local businesses. My little 8" square painting shown above will be there. This event is to be held at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 1741 Sayles Blvd.

Show Opening

We're so excited about our show opening! Robert Green did the post card image shown above as a composite of all three of our works. This really fits our exhibit theme of layering. I'll post show and artist statements later. Hope you can come!

Work in Progress

I hope I finish this painting in time for our February 14th show. I thought I would show an in progress shot and at the same time show off my new easel (Christmas present from Kenny) It has made it possible for me to work larger.

Hello, it's been a month since I've posted anything. Still alive and painting. I did this one a while back and am still not totally happy with it.

I'm working on some pieces for an art show that will open in a month. It's a joint show with my husband, Kenny and Robert Green. More on that later.

Hello, just wanted to share a couple of wonderful blogs I was featured on recently. I had noticed a lot more traffic on my Etsy store and couldn't figure out the reason. How fun to be notified that my work was put on a holiday gift guide for Chic and Charming! Lime, Stripes

For this still life, I used retro fabric found while thrifting. It was a scrap leftover from pillows I made and just wide enough to put the limes on. I like how noisy the color scheme turned out.

Candy Cane, Unopened

Peppermint

I wanted to paint the air around the candy with this one. To do this, I used a limited palette and thinner paint than usual. Had fun with the brushwork. When looking at the real peppermint set-up, it seemed to float since it was held up by the wrapper. I would like for that to have showed up more in the painting. Thankfully, I'm getting a sense of when continuing won't help on these little ones though, so I stopped.

Small, Freckled Pumpkin

I'm so happy to be working in my new studio space! My amazing husband replaced screens with real windows on our sunporch. Now I have a bigger workspace that is not in plain view from the kitchen. My first time to paint in it was yesterday. I did two paintings of little pumpkins that we got from a Floydada pumpkin farm.(it's in the panhandle of Texas) I believe they claimed to be the pumpkin capital of the world. This pumpkin reminded me of my mother who has a lot of beautiful freckles and the softest skin. I'll post another one tomorrow. SOLD

Here is a painting I did some time ago and never got around to posting. I was trying to capture the wonderful craziness that happens when looking through sunlit glass. I sometimes think of these glass vessels as lenses.

With Blue Willow

24" by 36" acrylic and collage on stretched canvas. The paint goes around the gallery wrapped edges and it is wired to hang without a frame.

I did this painting for a silent auction fund raiser for The Center for Contemporary Arts. The theme is "Mood Indigo" and the holiday gala will be on Nov 17th. I had to turn in the title about a week ago before I had even begun the painting. I guess I'm an optimist at heart. It was good to have the time constraint which made it impossible to overwork. Also, I was back with my old faithful acrylics and familiar props. I have done quite a few blue polka dot paintings lately and am beginning to see the blue dots when I close my eyes. Also this week I've been in the midst of finishing sealing the floor on my new studio area and will post pictures when I can of this new space. So exciting! SOLD

The Milky Way

16" by 20" mixed media on stretched canvas. The paint and collage wrap around the edges making a frame unneccessary. It has a high gloss varnish on it. More closeups and details are in my Etsy store.

I've been working on this for quite some time, putting it aside for a while and thinking about it. This piece comes from a sense of wonder at the fragility and smallness of my place on earth in such an infinite universe. That's a big thought to try to put in an artwork but, why not? I just finished a novel called "Beautiful Miscellaneous." In it a scientist who didn't believe in God, wrote a letter to God explaining why he doubted his unbelief. One of the reasons was, no one could explain the existence of gravity. I have another corny name for this painting, "Raise Your Hand If You Understand Gravity."
