Green Apple on Yellow Chintz

Here is an attempt to enjoy the sunshine we had this afternoon. I've often used chintz fabric as a part of still life set-ups. I'm drawn to these designs that are themselves paintings by anonomous artists. (to me anyway) This 8" by 8" painting is on a stretched canvas that has a 1 and 3/8" profile. It looks great without a frame.

Daily painting gives me time to try out subject matter I would'nt always do. I have a few old globes I've collected; this is the smallest one, a pencil sharpener. I am using a light source from a different angle thanks to the new light stand I scored for $4.00 from Helen's House of Fine Junque. Our church has a mission plan in the works for a year and a half down the road. My family is hoping to participate in some way, so we're excited to be thinking more globally now.

This is double sticky tape. I'd like to see how they make tape into rolls. I keep using a wintry palette. It's been pretty cold by my studio window this season. I'm going to buy some new colors this week, I hope, and expand my possibilities with oils.

This was an easy one to paint. I decided in two minutes what to paint, set it up and got to work with my old and scruffy and large bristle brushes. Some paintings I spend some time dithering so I really treasure this kind of experience when it happens.

Does this look familiar? I have gone back to an earlier acrylic painting that just did'nt have the quality of light I was wanting. It was a good chance to try oils on top of an acrylic underpainting. I like this version better than the first one. This time I used fairly loose painting with largish brushes for the small tight areas.

I went to the grocery store with the plan of buying a red flower to paint, well, I came home with these cherry peppers instead. I've really enjoyed painting on these 12" square canvases with a depth of 1 and 3/8". It gives more room for using different types of brushwork and I like to contrast thick paint with thin. Also these canvases have an object-like quality because of their proportions.

This is a reworked version of the painting a few days ago that had a teapot in it. Well, the teapot wasn't working because of color, composition, and troublesome rendering so I scraped it off and tried another tactic.

"Yellow Umbrella's, Unfurled" 12" by 12" oil on stretched canvas

We've been stuck inside because of an ice storm. After all the grey cold, it was good to set up these fun little umbrellas. I've continued to experiment with oils and am finding the advantages and disadvantages. After getting used to easily cleaned acrylics, I feel very whiny about dealing with solvents...but I was able to go back the next day and work on some transitions that would have been impossible with acrylic. This painting took a couple of days as it is larger than I've been doing at 12" square. SOLD

"Blue Jar With Snapdragons" 12" by 12" oil on stretched canvas

This one is a little bigger than the usual daily painting and it is done with oils, something I've only used a few times, many years ago. My usual media is acrylic. What a different experience... the paint is in constant fluid motion during the process. It's easier to change color decisions in acrylic because of the rapid drying time. Oil has a very long memory for whatever choice you make. It's harder to wipe off areas than I had remembered. I do like how the paint stays wet giving time to change the edges of things. This is going to take some experimention...I'm excited.

I wish I knew what castle is pictured on this teapot. It is one I found in a thrift store and seems old. It must be a souvenier of some sort.

I've been wanting to do a landscape.

These are from a collection of old dominoes I have. I particularly like the old wooden kind to look at even though the white ones are what I grew up playing with. My parents have been part of a club that's been getting together over the course of thirty five years and playing a domino game called "Forty Two." It is very common in Texas and is similar to bridge. My grandfather, a farmer, played regular dominoes at the cotton gin, when farming demands permitted.

We are still eating Christmas stocking grapefruit. (Texas Red) It's a challenge to keep the brushwork loose while painting in such a small format. The daily aspect gives me lot's of opportunities to keep trying.

"Chrysanthemum Dream" Acrylic and collage on 8" by 8" masonite.

I took a photographic image of a chrysanthemum that I've used before and drew it with silver paint pen onto black cardstock. This is the collaged part of the piece. I really enjoy combining drawing and painting and an interrupted image with a more complete one. This is a reworked version of the initial post. I did some glazing above the table as well as work all over. SOLD
