For Lucy original mixed media painting by Polly Jones

For Lucy by Polly Jones
I have been working on this one off and on for a few weeks, posted some process shots on Instagram. It's named "For Lucy" after a chimpanzee in a story I heard on the radio.  Hidden in the tablecloth is a picture of a chimpanzee from a volumn of The Golden Book Encylopedia. 30" by 40" acrylic mixed media on wood panel. In my Etsy store here.

Orchid Grid original mixed media painting by Polly Jones

Orchid Grid by Polly Jones
This is what I've been busy with lately, inspired by flowers my husband gave me for our  anniversary.  I was really taken by the way the bloom stems offshoot from the main stem.  It measures 24" by 12"  and is mixed media on canvas.  On Etsy here.

Are you on Instagram?  I've been posting over there under pollyjonesart and finally getting the hang of  it a bit.

Around the Curve, landscape painting by Polly Jones

landscape paintings by Polly Jones

Around the Curve by Polly Jones
Happy Monday to you!  I'm sharing a couple of paintings done on my trip to Italy this summer.  These scenes were from photos taken out of the window of the train with my Iphone.  I can't remember exactly where, but I think it was on the way from Florence to Rome.  I've listed the 8" by 10" one on the bottom in my Etsy store here.

Meanwhile I've been at work on a pesky, wayward flower painting.  Hopefully I will resolve it soon and show it to you.

Field in Italy mixed media landscape painting by Polly Jones

Field in Italy by Polly Jones
I painted this during some down time in Italy.  The imagery came from a photograph taken out the window on the bus. I believe it has a museum pass and a grocery receipt hidden under the paint.  It was meant to show through but I painted over it too much.  8" square acrylic on canvas.

Watercolor Landscapes from Italy by Polly Jones

View from San Miniato by Polly Jones
View from The Boboli Gardens by Polly Jones

These were painted on site. We found high places in Florence for amazing views.  Having time to sit and paint was a great way to experience Italy and rejuvenate.  It was a wonderful contrast to all of the crowded museums and mass transportation.

The top painting was done with a micron pen and watercolor while the bottom was just plain watercolor.  I'm still trying to get the hang of the layering process of watercolor.  It really makes a difference to let areas dry before adding details.  It creates a more translucent affect with crisp edges to contrast with the more "flowey" areas.  I think I just made up a word.

Summer Fruit original still life painting by Polly Jones

Summer Fruit by Polly Jones
I began this 8" by 10" still life in Oxford as a demonstration piece and then finished it up after we traveled to Italy.  I ended up adding the stripes from imagination because it was pretty boring without them.  We saw a lot of orange in Italy with all of the terra cotta roofs.  I've added this painting to my Etsy store here.

two landscape watercolors

Watercolor landscapes by Polly Jones
Hello again.  I hope all is well with you!  I've been away for a couple of months.  My husband was one of the art professors with a college study abroad group and I was able to tag along on a wonderful trip.  We were based in Oxford, England and Scandicci, Italy and our time was spent museum hopping and painting.

I'll be sharing a few pieces from the trip over the next few days.  Above are watercolors I did in Oxford.  The first was the view across the street from the house we stayed in.  The second was done in University Parks from a bench that J.R. Tolkein frequented.  Watercolor is not my favorite way to paint but it's growing on me.

Open Rose by Polly Jones
I'm going to be taking a break from posting on the blog for a little while.  Also, my Etsy store will be on vacation.  You may still contact me through my email at pollyjonesart@gmail.com. and I'll be back sharing work some time in July.  I'm planning on doing some outdoor landscape painting in the mean time.  Thank you so much for taking time to look at my work, I feel honored and humbled by your interest.  Some of you have been with me since 2006!

Progression and Some Day at The Center for Contemporary Arts

Progression by Polly Jones
30" by 40" acrylic mixed media painting on canvas.   I showed a progress photo of this here a while back. I'm really happy with the finished piece, though it is nothing like the ephemeral, mostly white painting I had imagined when beginning.   "Progression" as well as the painting below are part of a new work by Signature Artist Members show at The Center for Contemporary Arts here in Abilene.  There will be an opening during ArtWalk on May 8th.  Hope to see you there!

White Iris original mixed media painting by Polly Jones

White Iris by Polly Jones
This one has a little more invented color than usual.  I had to bring some irises inside to save them from the crazy wind we've been having.

White Iris, Restless original acrylic painting by Polly Jones

White Iris, Restless by Polly Jones
I've been so restless this week which is frustrating since I had time to paint.  I have been up and down checking email, putting loads of laundry in to wash, checking the real mail so much, it's a wonder I finished anything.

Progress on "Progression" large mixed media painting by Polly Jones

Here's a look at what's on the easel right now.  It's been on the easel and the floor too as a matter of fact.  The studio is a mess but at least it's filled with the smell of irises from the back garden.  This painting started with a very distinct image in my head which looks nothing like this.  I'm not sure how I got here and I'm not sure where it's going, but I'll keep you posted.  Thanks for looking!

Garlic in Golden Light original mixed media painting by Polly Jones

Garlic in Golden Light by Polly Jones

Garlic in Golden Light by Polly Jones
I spend quite a bit of time looking through all of the garlic in the bins at the grocery store until I find just the right ones.  They have to have that little tail part intact.

Whelk Shell for Dylan original mixed media painting by Polly Jones

Whelk for Dylan by Polly Jones
I do art with a boys and girls club once a week. Not long ago I took my shells for them to look at and draw. One little girl was so enamored with this little whelk shell. She was so excited about all of the colors shimmering together and she layered her markers to give that same quality to her drawing. It helped me to see it with fresh eyes.

I don't drink out of this old mug because of all of the crazing, but I sure enjoy painting it.

Some Day

Some Day by Polly Jones
18" by 24" acrylic mixed media on wood panel. Pompom daisies in that same glass pitcher, seashells and a ginger jar... it might be finished. There's a group show at The Center for Contemporary Arts next month that I'm hoping to have this included.

I keep forgetting to mention that I have been setting up a website.  It's on Virb, and has been fairly painless to work on.  If you have a moment, please take a look here:  http://pollyjonesart.com/  Let me know if you have any suggestions.  It's a work in progress.

Dirty Drawers and a catch up post

My friend Lara and I finally went to an open life drawing session at  The Center for Contemporary Art  here in Abilene last night.  The group is called "The Dirty Drawers." We've been talking about doing it for years.  Now I know why I hadn't gone...it is hard and scary.  Wow, I was much worse than I expected.  I "forgot" to take pictures while there and am only showing the portrait I did.  Let me clarify that she did not actually have facial hair. In drawing the full body, apparently a good sense of anatomy is pretty important.  I feel challenged now, and am going to have to go back and do better!
Listening Shell for Lynne by Polly Jones
Here is a commission painting I did a couple of weeks ago.  I learn so much every time I go back and repeat a subject.
I'm working on an 18" by 24" painting now, taking it slow because I want to leave it open and have different degrees of finish in it.  Fortunately the flowers are still alive!  I hope to work on it this afternoon, but also need to clean house and make a desert for my book club coming over tonight.  We're discussing "Orphan Train" by Kristina Baker Kline.  Has anyone out there read it?

Two paintings, new versions

I Dream of Daffodils by Polly Jones

Sunday Afternoon by Polly Jones
I'm pretty sure I've made public vows on this blog not to go back and rework paintings but instead move on to new work.  That's easier said than done. Some paintings are very bossy and won't shut up until I go back and work on them some more.  Here's are links to the old versions:  I Dream of Daffodils and Sunday Afternoon.  I'm also working on a commission of a shell painting.

I Dream of Daffodils by Polly Jones

This vase shape reminded me of "I Dream of Jeanie's" home.  You have to be a certain age to get that reference.  Doing taxes and eating Chinese food....hope all is well with you.

Sunday Afternoon original acrylic mixed media painting by Polly Jones

Sunday Afternoon by Polly Jones
After a dreary season of cold and grey, my eyes desperately need to see some color. This was a crazy still life set up full of pattern and fun to paint. I used a wood block print cloth from Eternal Threads as a beginning point and went on from there with some of my favorite objects: that same black ginger jar, blue willow bowl and teapot from China. It's part of my series that incorporates a page of poetry from an old book I have, as well as map bits.
